How to solve two-step literal equations?

There are two sets of solving two step literal equations.

Solving literal equations involves isolating a specific variable in an equation that contains multiple variables. The goal is to rearrange the equation to solve for the desired variable. Here’s how to solve literal equations step by step:

  1. Identify the Variable to Solve For: Determine which variable you want to isolate and solve for in the equation. You have to do PEMDAS backwards in order to isolate the variable. Addition or subtraction first, then multiplication or division, then exponent and then parenthesis.
  2. Perform Inverse Operations: Use inverse operations to isolate the variable on one side of the equation. Perform the same operations on both sides of the equation to maintain balance.
  3. Simplify and Solve: Continue solving for the desired variable by simplifying the equation step by step until you have the variable isolated on one side.
  4. Check Your Solution: After isolating the variable, substitute the solution back into the original equation to verify that it satisfies the equation.

Here’s an example to illustrate the process:

Example: Solve the equation 2x+3y=12 for x.

  1. Identify the variable to solve for:
    We want to solve for x.
  2. Perform inverse operations: To isolate x, we need to get rid of the terms involving y. Subtract 3y from both sides of the equation:
    2x = 12 − 3y
  3. Simplify and solve: Divide both sides of the equation by 2 to solve for x: x = 6 - 3/2 y
